Following this year’s National Hurricane Conference and Florida’s continuing efforts on climate preparedness, Orlando has just teamed up with over 60 other cities and counties across Florida in the enactment of the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program.
The Orlando City Council unanimously agreed to legislate the program earlier this week, voting to join the Green Corridor PACE district. Within this sector, YgreneWorks, Florida’s largest energy funding PACE program, will be financing millions of dollars towards energy efficiency and climate resiliency upgrades for both residential and commercial divisions.
Within PACE, funding is given through special assessments gathered from the properties of home and business owners who want higher-efficiency and energy saving systems like solar panels and solar water heaters. This allows for the loan to stay with the property if the owners decide to leave.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is ecstatic about the decision and what this could do for the city. “Orlando is committed to being the most sustainable city in America, and to accomplish this it takes everyone, from our residents to business and government doing all that we can to conserve, preserve and reuse our valuable resources,” he says in a written release. “This new program is another way we are providing the necessary tools to help our community reduce our impact on our environment.”
