Florida Consumer Alert: Beware of misleading solar sales pitches

On September 14, 2010 the Orlando Sentinel reported that misleading claims about rebates for solar equipment and installation by solar companies are on the rise. The article states that Florida regulators are investigating hundreds of complaints this year resulting from misleading claims from solar companies about how much state and federal rebates would offset the costs of new solar electric or solar hot water systems.
As one of Florida’s oldest and most reputable solar businesses we have noticed this unwelcome trend developing for some time. Some of these companies are not solar companies at all, but boiler room operations who sub contract out the work the boiler rooms generate. Not only will some of these operations exaggerate claims about the rebates that are available, they will embellish the systems capabilities and power output. The workmanship and the products of these businesses are often substandard. We have repaired and replaced many of these systems.
The State of Florida’s solar rebate program has sadly expired though the equipment is still tax exempt. (http://www.dsireusa.org/incentives/incentive.cfm?Incentive_Code=FL01F&re=1&ee=1 ) the Federal rebate program is still in effect.  For Photovoltaic (solar electric systems) and solar hot water systems the Federal Government is offering an unlimited 30% rebate (http://www.dsireusa.org/incentives/incentive.cfm?Incentive_Code=US37F&re... ). Many local utilities have financially attractive programs available for residential and commercial solar. Please make certain to validate any programs you are offered. If you have any questions about any solar programs that are available, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Solar power is a good value and pays for itself over time. It is also a critical for an energy independent country and a cleaner environment.
If you are considering using solar power, please research the company you are using and get references. We will post another article on tips to avoid solar scams.
