Solar Source to build solar farm at Guantanamo Bay

Published 3/9/2011 Bay News 9

A local company has just landed a military contract that will create jobs.

Solar Source of Largo will build a solar farm at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

It's a $1.5 million contract.

The company will install 1,200 solar panels at the base.

"What I've seen in the past 12 to 24 months specifically from the U.S. Military is a lot of interest and or construction going on with solar technology. Just about every base that I know of has initiative starting or initially begun" said Rick Gilbert of Solar Source.

The contract has nothing to do with the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The solar energy will be used to power a workout facility for military personnel.

Solar Source has recently hired 10 people and say they will continue to expand.
